Electrical Installation at GTech's National Appliance Warehouse

GTech, a leading company in innovative home appliances, recently developed a new national warehouse to streamline distribution and storage operations. Scope was contracted to handle the complete electrical installation for the warehouse. This project included installing power and data systems, setting up forklift charging stations, wiring for packing benches, and upgrading the power supply for the existing roller shutter doors. The project was executed over a period of six months, ensuring that GTech's warehouse was equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support efficient operations.

What Did We Want To Accomplish?

  • Power and Data Infrastructure: Provide reliable power and data connectivity throughout the warehouse.

  • Forklift Charging Stations: Install dedicated charging points for electric forklifts.

  • Packing Benches Setup: Equip packing benches with power outlets and data connections to support packing operations.

  • Roller Shutter Door Upgrades: Enhance the power supply for smoother operation of roller shutter doors.

How Did Gtech Benefit?

  • Enhanced Operational Efficiency: The new electrical and data infrastructure significantly improved operational efficiency, with reliable power and data connectivity supporting critical warehouse functions.

  • Improved Safety and Reliability: The installation of dedicated forklift charging stations and upgraded roller shutter doors enhanced safety and reliability, reducing operational risks and maintenance needs.

  • Scalability: The infrastructure was designed to support future growth, providing GTech with the flexibility to expand its operations without major electrical overhauls.

Project Planning and Design

       1. Site Assessment and Planning:

The project commenced with a thorough site assessment to                         understand the specific requirements of GTech's operations:

  • Load Assessment: Analysing the power demands of the warehouse, including machinery, lighting, and operational equipment.

  • Data Needs: Identifying data connectivity requirements for administrative and operational efficiency.

  • Equipment Locations: Determining optimal locations for forklift charging stations and packing benches.

       2. System Design:

The design phase included detailed planning for each component:

  • Power Distribution: Designing a robust electrical infrastructure to distribute power efficiently across the warehouse, including high-load areas such as the forklift charging zone.

  • Data Network: Planning a comprehensive data network to support warehouse management systems, inventory tracking, and communication.

  • Specialised Installations: Custom solutions for the forklift charging stations and power requirements for packing benches.

Installation Process

       1. Infrastructure Setup:

  • Cabling and Conduits: Installation of power and data conduits throughout the warehouse, ensuring minimal disruption to operations and future maintenance.

  • Distribution Panels: Setting up main and sub-distribution panels to manage power distribution efficiently and safely.

       2. Forklift Charging Stations:

  • Dedicated Circuits: Installation of dedicated electrical circuits and charging points for electric forklifts, ensuring they have sufficient power supply for rapid charging.

  • Safety Features: Incorporation of safety features, such as emergency shut-off switches and overload protection, to prevent electrical hazards.

       3. Packing Benches:

  • Power Outlets and Data Ports: Installation of power outlets and data ports at each packing bench, supporting electronic devices, printers, and other necessary equipment.

  • Network Integration: Ensuring seamless data connectivity for inventory management and order processing systems.

       4. Roller Shutter Door Upgrades:

  • Power Supply Enhancement: Upgrading the electrical supply for existing roller shutter doors to support more efficient and reliable operation, including motor upgrades where necessary.

  • Automation Integration: Implementing control systems for the automated operation of roller shutters, enhancing security and ease of use.

       5. Testing and Commissioning: Once installations were complete,               rigorous testing was conducted to ensure all systems operated                   correctly and safely:

  • Electrical Testing: Comprehensive testing of all electrical installations, including circuit integrity, grounding, and load testing.

  • Data Network Testing: Ensuring reliable data transmission and connectivity across the warehouse.

  • Functional Testing: Operational testing of forklift chargers, packing benches, and roller shutter doors to verify functionality and efficiency.
